Charles City man dies in crash

Press Staff Report

A Charles City man died in a crash Thursday morning involving a bus.

Harold Vermeer, 72, of Charles City, was killed about 8:25 a.m. in an accident that occurred between Charles City and Greene, according to a report by the Iowa Highway Patrol.

According to the report, Vermeer was southbound on Packard Avenue driving a 2006 Buick Rendezvous and failed to come to a stop at the stop sign at 270th Street.

His vehicle was struck by a westbound 1996 bus being driven by Michael Katcher, age 32, of Greene, according to the state report. Vermeer was fatally injured, the report said.

According to the report, Matthew Katcher, age 32, of Greene, was injured and transported by private vehicle to the Waverly Hospital.

It isn’t clear from the State Patrol report whether the driver and the injured person in the Katcher vehicle are two different people, or if the report contains an error in naming the person involved.

The Press called the area State Patrol office in Mason City Thursday night and the person answering the phone said he would check on the information. The report had not been changed as of press time.

The accident is still under investigation. The Iowa State Patrol, Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Marble Rock Fire Department, AMR and Charles City Fire Department all assisted at the accident scene.
