People call them by different names — garage sale, tag sale, yard sale, even great big metal shed sale.

Whatever they go by, these sales are an opportunity for the sellers to clear out some no-longer-needed items and make a little cash, and for the buyers to find some bargains on items that are exactly what they want.

The semi-annual Charles City garage sale weekend is now underway, with some sales starting Thursday or even as early as Wednesday, but many running today (Friday) and/or Saturday.

Twenty sales were listed in the Wednesday Charles City Press classified advertising pages and this week’s Northeast Iowa Shopper. That listing is still available at www.charlescitypress.com in the Wednesday Press E-Edition or under the tab for Other Info/Northeast Iowa Shopper.

The multi-family garage sale at 1208 Main St. was busy Thursday early afternoon, and the group of women running the event said it had been busy since it began on Wednesday.

Dixie Blickenderfer said the Blickenderfer, Sonberg, Skarpness and Clites families organized the sale being held in a large machine shed on the southern edge of the city, and a few other families also contributed items to the sale.

Advertised were toys, new baby clothes and baby items, decor, gardening, paint and tools, clothing in many sizes, handmade crafts, household items and “a little bit of everything and anything.”

Blickenderfer said the group tries to have a sale at least once a year, sometimes twice. Their sale this year ends Friday, but plenty of others will also be available on Saturday.
