The Charles City Elks Lodge Charitable Trust handed out three checks to various Charles City School District organizations on Wednesday evening at the Elks Lodge.

The Elks presented $100 checks to the Charles City athletic department and the fine arts department and a $1,000 check to Project RISE.

Project RISE is a student-led, peer-to-peer mentoring program, where high school kids volunteer their time to help middle school kids. This is the third year for project RISE at Charles City, which started out with 10-12 mentors, and now the numbers are close to 70.

“The kids are really getting involved, the kids are positive about it, and it’s been a very positive thing for Charles City,” said Dan Caffrey, Charles City Juvenile Court Liaison Officer.

Caffrey said the program is catching on, and students from Charles City are making presentations all over the state to other students who are interested. Project RISE mentor students made a presentation at the Iowa Alternative Education Conference in April.

Accepting a check for the athletic department was Charles City High School Athletic Director Todd Forsythe, while Jake Gassman accepted the check on behalf of the arts program and Dan Caffrey and students Kaydon Cormeny and Katie Garcia accepted a check for Project RISE.
