A Rudd man convicted of two misdemeanor charges of trespass and domestic assault after allegedly attacking a woman with a screwdriver, was sentenced to a total of 45 days in jail recently.

He was given credit for time served, and a jailer at the Floyd County Jail said Wednesday he was no longer in custody.

Matthew John Stiles, age 32, was originally arrested July 18 after allegedly breaking into a residence and attacking the woman living there by stabbing her with a screwdriver.

He was charged with first-degree burglary for allegedly breaking into the residence while the woman was present and “intentionally or recklessly” inflicting bodily injury. The burglary charge is a Class B felony, with a possible sentence of up to 25 years in prison.

He was also charged with domestic abuse assault while displaying a dangerous weapon or with the intent to inflict a serious injury. This charge is an aggravated misdemeanor, punishable by up to two years.

At a trial in Floyd County District Court early last month, a jury found Stiles guilty, but on lesser charges. The jury convicted him of trespass, a simple misdemeanor, and domestic assault, an aggravated misdemeanor.

At his sentencing hearing last week, District Court Judge DeDra Schroeder sentenced Stiles to 15 days in jail on the trespassing conviction, and 30 days in jail on the domestic abuse assault conviction.

She ordered the sentences to run consecutively, for a total of 45 days, although she granted credit for time already served while he was being held awaiting trial, as is required by Iowa law.

Schroeder also ordered Stiles to pay $265 in fines plus surcharges, $1,950 toward the cost of his defense, and other fees and charges.

She also ordered him to complete a batterer’s treatment program and pay any fees associated with the course.
