Three Comet speech groups earn All-State recognition
By James Grob, jgrob@charlescitypress.com
Saturday was another successful one for the Charles City High School Speech and Drama Department, as four out of five group events received the highest ratings at Iowa High School State Large Group Speech competition at Waterloo West High School.
Three of those groups of Comets earned All-State honors, and one group was chosen to perform at the Iowa All-State Large Group Speech Festival.
The Improvisational Acting group of Christian Howe and Griffin Franksain — both freshman — will have the honor of performing at the event, which will be at the Iowa State Center in Ames on Feb. 16.
Other Comet groups who received all-state medals for “outstanding” performances include the Ensemble Acting duo of Ruby Peterson and Lily Woodard and Charles City’s Reader’s Theatre entourage of Mariah McKenzie, Ruby Peterson, Olivia Wolfe, Darian Cleveland, Aaron Montemayor, McKenna Oleson, Nathan Schultz, MaKenna Jensen, Cael Ruzicka, Eliza Wolford, Griffin Franksain, Emma Schmiedel.
The Charles City Improvisational Acting duo of Emily Woodard and Lily Woodard also received Division I ratings — the highest score — from all judges at the state competition in Waterloo. The Charles City Choral Reading group earned a Division II rating.
