The Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association recently recognized Charles City native James Scholbrock as the 2019 Administrator of the Year.
Scholbrock has been the secondary principal at Lake Mills Community School since 1999. He started his career as a teacher and coach at Center Point-Urbana in 1990.
Scholbrock graduated in 1985 from Charles City High School.
“I really enjoyed growing up in Charles City,” Scholbrock said. “My education at Immaculate Conception Catholic School and Charles City Community School was great and helped me be successful at Iowa State University.”
After earning his bachelor’s degree at Iowa State University, he turned to the University of Iowa for his master’s degree and graduated form there in 1999.
At Center Point-Urbana, he taught social studies at the middle school. As a secondary principal at Lake Mills, he earned his certificate of advanced studies in 2009 from Iowa State University.
Scholbrock is being recognized for his leadership at Lake Mills and being a part of the school’s excellence in education.
Scholbrock and his wife, LuAnn, have three college-age children. Each of them graduated from Lake Mills and participated in both athletics and the fine arts.
“We moved to Lake Mills in 1999 to be closer to our family in Charles City and Mason City,” he said. “North Iowa is a great place to raise a family.”
He said he has worked with remarkable students, parents and staff during his time at Lake Mills and is grateful to be part of that school and community. He said he feels that activities and athletics are an important part of education, and the real world skills that are learned on the court or stage are extremely valuable.
“Competing and performing allow students to apply the things they have learned and gain confidence about their abilities to overcome obstacles,” Scholbrock said. He added that he feels lucky to work with young adults.
Lake Mills Athletic Director Jim Boehmer said that Scholbrock is very supportive of Lake Mills athletics and activities.
“He has supported our staff and worked to give us the best opportunities we can to use our co-curricular activities as an extension of the classroom,” Boehmer said. “What I appreciate about Jim is that he focuses on the right thing: building young men and young women into productive adults.”
