An early Sunday morning car chase down Main Street in Charles City has led to the arrest of a passenger in the vehicle and an ongoing search for the driver.

A Charles City police officer attempted a traffic stop at the intersection of Blunt Street and North Main around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a police report.

The driver did not stop, headed south on Main Street and exited the vehicle in the parking lot of Lantern Park Apartments in the 600 block of 11th Street. After a short foot pursuit, the passenger, Robert Lee Zollic Coffer, 22, of Charles City, was apprehended and charged with interference with official acts.

According to Charles City Police Chief Hugh Anderson, the driver of the vehicle was identified but was not able to be located after fleeing the scene. Anderson said his department will seek out warrants for the driver.

“We’re finishing the investigation on that and then we’ll file charges,” he said.

Anderson said he wasn’t sure what charges would be filed.

“That I don’t know at this time – obviously for the driving offenses and whatever else comes from that,” he said.

Anderson said the officer attempted to pull over the driver for traffic violations and the vehicle was impounded.
