It was the Espy Awards, Charles City style.
Charles City students, coaches and parents were invited to walk down the “orange carpet” Tuesday evening at the inaugural Comet Choice Awards, held at the Floyd County Youth Enrichment Center.
Athletes and participants in other extra-curricular activities such as band, orchestra, choir, speech and drama were honored by their coaches and directors. Among several other awards, Sami Heyer was named top female athlete and Jack Molstead was named top male athlete.
The event was catered by Comet Cafe, and some unusual awards were given out.
For example, Anastasia Baldus was named Outstanding Drama Servant Leader by the drama department.
Best Individual Performance in a Single Event went to Nick Litterer for his performance at the state swim meet.
The Charles City football team received the award for Best Team Performance in a Single Event for the upset of top-ranked LaPorte City-Union last fall.
The “Best Teammate” award, voted on by the athletes, was a tie between Alec Elsbernd and Cole Reams. Reams was also given the Bernie Saggau Award.
Double award winners also included Olivia Wolfe, who was awarded the Iowa Choral Director’s Award and the Outstanding Actor award; Mariah McKenzie, who was awarded the National School Orchestra Award and the best performer for individual speech; Michael Peterson was outstanding performer for group speech and the National Choir Award.
