A Charles City man was injured early Tuesday morning in southern Minnesota when the semi truck he was driving crashed and started on fire.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported that David Lee Hoover, age 52, of Charles City was traveling east on Interstate 90, driving a 2020 Kenworth semi pulling a trailer loaded with pigs, when he lost control and struck a guardrail and bridge.

The semi came to rest under the bridge and started on fire, the report said. Hoover was transported to St. Marys Hospital of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.

The report said an undetermined number of pigs were killed in the crash.

The accident occurred just after 3 a.m. about 10 miles east of Austin, Minnesota, and closed the eastbound lanes of the interstate for several hours as firefighters and others cleared debris from the crash under the 630th Avenue bridge.

The report described the road conditions as wet.

Assisting at the scene were personnel from the Minnesota State Patrol, Austin Police Department, Mower County Sheriff’s Office, Mayo Clinic Ambulance, Rose Creek Fire Department and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
