The sale is nearly three times as long this year, with three times the number of books on sale — and more genres than ever before.

The annual book sale by the Charles City Lions Club kicked off Wednesday, with nearly 50,000 books for bibliophiles to peruse. The sale takes place at 300 Gilbert Street, at the east entrance of Ace Hardware in Charles City, and has increased in longevity from four days to 11 days.

Times through this Friday will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m, and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Books will be on sale Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., then Monday through Friday next week from 2-6 p.m., and next Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.

The annual book sale has been going on since 1964, with proceeds going back to the community through Lions projects. The prices on the donated books range from 50 cents to $4 each.

Shoppers can also purchase 50/50 fundraiser cash raffle tickets at the sale. A drawing will be held last day of the sale, and 50 percent of the jackpot will be awarded to the entry ticket drawn and 50 percent will go to the Charles City Lions Club for ongoing charitable activities.
