Charles City pastor Leeper opens 2020 Iowa legislative session with prayer
Russ Leeper, senior pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church of Charles City, led the Iowa House of Representatives in the opening prayer on Monday morning last week, Jan. 16, as the 2020 Iowa legislative session opened at the state Capitol. Leeper was a guest of Rep. Todd Prichard, D-Charles City, the Iowa House minority leader and a congregation member at St. John church.
Leeper grew up in Waterloo and attended Wartburg College in Waverly, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, and Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, where he earned his master of divinity degree. He served congregations in Nebraska and Wisconsin for 25 years before coming to St. John in August of 2017.
