The Charles City Comets will have five teams competing this weekend at the Iowa State Large Group Speech competition at Dubuque Senior High School.

“We are super proud of the team this year,” said Charles City speech coach Brenda Bailey. “We have a group of 18 freshmen who have already stepped right up as leaders and now seven of them are headed to state.”

The groups qualified by earning all Division I ratings at district competition in Decorah two weeks ago. The events which qualified for state include Reader’s Theatre, three Ensemble Acting teams and Improvisational Acting.

“All of the students have worked super hard this year, so we’re hopeful for some All-State nods on Saturday,” Bailey said.

Senior twin sisters Emily and Lily Woodard paired up for two state-qualifying events.

“We are excited for senior twins, Emily and Lily Woodard both all-staters, who really wanted to do both of their pieces together this year,” Bailey said.

The duo’s Improvisation reached state level as did the duo’s Ensemble performance from “Inherit the Wind,” by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee.

The Reader’s Theatre group performed “Perils of Lulu” by William Gleason. That team members are seniors Darian Cleveland, Aaron Montemayor, McKenna Oleson, Selah Opp, Ella Rogstad and Nathan Schultz; junior Monika Kacprzak, sophomores Sincere Collins, Griffin Franksain, Christian Howe and Emma Schmiedel and freshman Harper McInroy.

“We’ve worked around so many schedules with our readers theatre, but the seniors in the cast are showing great leadership in bringing the cast together,” Bailey said.

The Ensemble cast of senior Ella Rogstad and freshmen Anders Haglund and Anna Herbrechtsmeyer performed “Three on a Bench” by Doris Estrada; while freshmen Isaac Hervert, Sophia Jensen, Harper McInroy, Teagan Prigge and Lance Shivers performed “The Actor’s Nightmare” by Christopher Durang

All the teams will perform Saturday and All-State performers will be announced by around 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
