Floyd County Fair announces changes: No entertainment, single-day livestock events

To The Press

The Floyd County Fair will operate this summer without ground entertainment or grandstand attractions, and all livestock shows will be single-day events with no animals kept overnight at the fairgrounds.

The Floyd County Fair Board made the announcement on its website, saying that the requirements caused by COVID-19 rules prevented it from putting on the fair that had been planned.

The Fair Board said it made the decision “due to the ongoing building and grounds capacity limits, 6-foot social distancing restrictions, public health guidelines, and additional precautions being put in place to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

“This decision was not made lightly, as we want nothing more than to have the fair,” the announcement said. “However, our volunteers, spectators, entertainers, vendors, youth exhibitors health and safety are our main concerns.”

The focus will be on youth, to provide “a safe and healthy experience for them this summer as they showcase their hard work and projects.”
Changes include:

• All livestock shows will be held in a “show and go” format. No overnight stalling will be allowed and each species will show on a separate day to ensure sanitizing procedures can take place between shows.

• Static exhibits will be dropped off and judged based on write-up only; no face-to-face judging will take place.

• Fair queen contest will be held at this time with number restrictions put in place. The Lil Miss & Mr. competition has been canceled.

• All grandstand events and ground acts are canceled at this time.

• No commercial exhibits will be allowed.

• No camping will be allowed on the grounds.

“After consulting with Floyd County Public Health and Emergency Management, Floyd County FFA Chapters and Extension, and Fair Board members, it was determined this was the best decision due to the uncertainty of what the public health situation may look like in mid-July,” the Fair Board said.

It said it is discussing possibly rescheduling entertainment events in the fall if state restrictions are lifted, and more details will be released regarding those events at a later date.

The board said a detailed list will be sent to all exhibitors regarding the new rules and changes.

The livestock shows will be live-streamed on the Floyd County Fair’s Facebook page, it said.

“As we navigate through these unprecedented times, we want to thank the local communities, our sponsors and partners for continuing to support the Floyd County Fair. We look forward to being back for 2021!” the Fair Board said.
