Charles City High School works to have as normal a homecoming week as possible

In a year where nothing is normal, the students at Charles City High School have worked hard to try to make their 2020 Homecoming Week as close to normal as possible.
“We had to work around the problems but we did everything we could,” said CCHS Student Council member Michellel Jones, a junior. “We tried everything we could to try to make everyone excited and happy, and I think it went great.”
At the pep rally Wednesday at Comet Gym, the festivities looked more spaced out, while the students — and even the horns in the pep band — were masked up, but the celebration went on. The homecoming theme this year is “Win as one, rise together.”
The campus was still adorned in black and orange, Comet Drive was colorfully chalked, and walls and fences were decorated. Alternative ways of spreading school spirit were found. For example, Jones said, instead of the high school students going to the elementary schools, they made posters that were delivered to the elementary schools.
Her classmate and fellow student council member, Hannah Jones, said that although there is no traditional parade this year, the students were still putting on a “virtual parade,” which could be watched online Friday starting at about 3:15 p.m. on the school district’s social media pages.
Senior class President Libbie McKeag said that when school started the students didn’t think they’d be able to have a homecoming at all. The student council met three times a week for the past two weeks to plan the scaled-back — but still spirited — festivities.
“I did not think we’d be able to have a pep rally, so it was nice to have one today,” McKeag said Wednesday.
Most of the rest of the festivities will take place before, during and after the football game Friday evening. Seniors in football, band, cheer and cross country will all be recognized at 7 p.m., with the varsity football game set to start at 7:30 p.m.
Spectators should arrive early Friday if they want to see the crowning of the homecoming king and queen, which is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
The Charles City High School Homecoming Court of 2020 is made up of king candidates Drew Staudt, Alec Staudt, Caden Collins, Kaden Barry and Cael Ruzicka, and queen candidates Dani Reetz, Nia Litterer, Kiki Connell, Gillian Anderson and Danielle Stock.
New members of the Comet Hall of Fame — Truman Manship, A.B.F. Hildreth and Lola Krumm — will be recognized posthumously at halftime. The “Master of Sports” recognition will also take place at halftime.
