Floyd County law enforcement center may be ready for occupancy in April

Work crews will begin this week finally joining the new Floyd County law enforcement center project with the courthouse update project, as they start cutting through the courthouse walls to connect it to the new atrium.

The connections will generally be made where existing windows are now, with the walls below the windows cut out and the space enlarged to provide access between each floor of the courthouse and the atrium that includes handicapped-accessible restrooms for each floor and a new public elevator and a Sheriff’s Office elevator for detainee transport.

Cutting through the walls will likely be very noisy, and the county supervisors wanted to make the public aware of what’s going on.

The board workshop meeting Monday morning included an update from Brian Shindelar, the project site manager, as just about every workshop meeting does, and included a long list of contractors and subcontractors working on various parts of the project.

“There’s a lot of people out there,” said Shindelar, who works for The Samuels Group, the company acting as construction manager for the law enforcement center and courthouse update projects.

Supervisor Linda Tjaden said, “We’re excited to see activity going on,” adding that it’s “pretty amazing when you walk through the facility” to see how much is changed every week.

Tjaden said the current plan is for the law enforcement center to be completed and have the Sheriff’s Office and the jail detainees move from their current location at the top floor of the courthouse “in April at the earliest.”

She said a planning meeting is scheduled for next week to discuss how and when the updates in the courthouse will be done. Those updates include all new windows, a new heating and air-conditioning system and a new fire sprinkler system, as well as some minor office changes.
