Charles City 8th-grade students invested a day of service to the community on Wednesday as they cleaned up parks, trails, and around several school campuses. Students picked up trash, a saw, a broken umbrella, and even moved a mattress for city crews to pick up, and will be out in the community again in early May.

The community service day was part of a partnership with the Charles City Parks and Rec Department. Before the city’s swimming pool is open this year, middle school students will get a free swim day between May 23-25, and the students are each committing to four hours of community service in return.

More than 60 students broke into small groups and cleaned up parks, shelters and other areas throughout the city. Among other things, the students cleaned up trash, swept out shelters, cleaned tables and removed debris along the Charley Western Trail, Central Park, Sportsman’s Park, Wildwood Park and Lions Field and cleaned up parking lots and green areas around the school campus.
