A one, two punch — knockout! No actual boxing, like that pictured here on Temple Baptist Church’s float in the Charles City Independence Day parade, will take place next week at its “Cola Wars.” There will be competitive games pitting Pepsi against Coke, however.

Temple Baptist Church designed a highly memorable float for the Fourth of July parade. It was a boxing ring with Pepsi in one corner and Coke in the other. The fighters duked it out during the entire parade route, but who won?

The winners are still yet to be determined.

“Cola Wars — it’s going to be basically a teen ministry where we break into two teams

where we have Pepsi against Coke,” the Charles City church’s pastor, the Rev. Adam Whitty said.

The purpose of Cola Wars is to excite teens about entering conversations about God.

“It doesn’t have any spiritual integration,” Whitty said. “What we’re trying to do is promote an event to get teens to come and participate.”

Although the float depicted boxing, Whitty assures attendees no one will be knocked out.

“(They’re) safe games,” he said. “We do that with the purpose of getting teens in (conversation about) the word of God.”

Whitty heard about the Cola Wars from Pastor Josh Robinson, who serves in Des Moines. According Whitty, Temple Baptist will tap into Robinson’s experience.

“Our church is hosting the event, we’re not running the event,” Whitty said. “Our sister church in Des Moines is coming up and they’re going to come up and do the games.”

Teens seventh through 12th grade are invited to participate in the Cola Wars. The competition will begin at 7 p.m. and go until 9 p.m. starting Aug. 8 through Aug. 12. No pre-registration is required.

“Whoever shows up, shows up,” Whitty said. “We’ll get them down and hope they’ll stay the whole week.”
