Project AWARE to flow through Charles City this summer

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Project AWARE will spend time in Charles City this July, cleaning up a stretch of the Cedar River from the Minnesota state line south to Nashua.

The yearly event draws hundreds of volunteers to an Iowa river, where they canoe or kayak and dig out trash embedded along the riverbanks, City Administrator Steve Diers said.

“It’s kind of like RAGBRAI. They set up a tent city, with 300 to 400 people staying in tents. We’re working on possible locations they could stage,” he said.

Volunteers would probably be in Charles City on July 12 and 13. Details are still being settled.

“They’re really excited for coming to Charles City with everything we’ve done with the riverfront. It’s going to be another opportunity to show off our riverfront and our community,” Diers said. “Hopefully it will drive some business for our shops and retailers. It’s a really neat opportunity to have that come through town.”
