Helga King

Helga King, 78, of Charles City, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City with her loving family by her side.

A memorial service for Helga will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City with Pastor Russ Leeper from Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Inurnment will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City.

Helga (Wengenroth) King, the daughter of Wilhelm and Louisa (Koenig) Wengenroth, was born in Bieber, Germany on January 12, 1941. She received her education in Germany and met the love of her life, Lester “Sonny” King, Jr., when she was 19 years old. The couple was united in marriage on July 18, 1960 at the Darmstadt Air Force Base in Darmstadt, Germany.

Helga followed Lester to the United States once her paperwork was in order to leave Germany. The couple made their home in Charles City where they raised their family. Helga worked various jobs throughout her life including manager of Fine Arts Engraving in Illinois, Certified Nursing Assistant, K-Mart and Dollar General.

Helga had an extreme soft spot in her heart for all animals and was always rescuing or feeding those that needed help whether it be the strays in the neighborhood or the crows. She had a heart of gold and donated whatever she could to the Police Officer’s Fund, ASPCA and St. Jude Children’s Hospital (Helga didn’t want little children suffering like she did with cancer).

Helga loved to crochet and taught all of her children and at least one of her grandchildren in each family so that this legacy would continue even with her being gone. She loved fiercely (the family’s loving way of saying that she hugged so hard it hurt sometimes) and just cared for everyone in her life.

Living family members include her four children: Jacquelyn King Hefner of Romeoville, Illinois, Donna King Roscoe of Kentwood, Michigan, Derrick “Rick” (Dianne) King of Hemet, California and Jeannette King (Gary) Finney of Floyd; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Kathleen Mae King of Oregon; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Helga was preceded in death by her husband, Lester “Sonny” William King, Jr.; parents, Wilhelm and Louisa Wengenroth; and parents-in-law, Lester, Sr. and June King.
