Dan Edward Barth, the son of Gale and Thelma (Waid) Barth, was born May 7, 1937 in Greene, Iowa. He received his education in Greene, graduating from Greene High School in 1955. Dan was involved with the Army National Guard during his senior year of high school and decided to enlist in the United States Army after he graduated. He proudly served his country during peace time in California and Alaska, and was honorably discharged in 1958.
Dan attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota for one year before returning to the Greene area to farm. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Merfeld on November 28, 1959 and this union was blessed with four children. Dan continued farming for almost 40 years. He also ran his own electrical business for several years.
Dan was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City and the American Legion in Greene. He enjoyed hunting, fishing at Beed’s Lake, boating on the Shell Rock River, camping and canoeing. Dan built and assembled remote control model airplanes to fly on the farm; some of the maiden flights went very well while others ended in the ground or on the side of the silo.
Dan loved spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He rarely said “no” when it came time for rides on the lawnmower, in the combine or on the tractor. Dan even purchased a go-cart that he fixed up so the grandchildren could ride in it. They loved it so much, and fought over whose turn it was, that he bought a second one for them to share. Dan will be missed by all who loved him.
Living family members include his wife, Marjorie of Charles City; four children: Jane (Ron) Smith of Farmington, Minnesota, Dan F. (Cindy) Barth of Indianola, Marilyn Wunsch of Kalona and Mary Bridget “Bitsy” Barth of Urbana, Illinois; 13 grandchildren: Jessica (Chad) Hammerschmidt, Sarah (Bryce) Jacobson, Emily Smith, Samantha Barth, Benjamin Barth, Nathan Barth, Kayla Barth, Kyle Barth, Amanda Wunsch (Erik Shelton), Allyson (Jason) Schable, Adam (Liz) Wunsch, Liz (Scott) Young and Katie (James) Vance; 12 great-grandchildren: Dylan, Jade, Corbin, Chase, Harper, Taylor, Avery, Lennox, Orion, David, Natalie and Peyton; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rosemary Schinnow; and brother, James Barth.
