Wilbur “Willie” Elso Van Hauen, the son of Henry and Leona (Weinberg) Van Hauen, was born May 4, 1942 in Clarksville, Iowa. He received his education through the Charles City School System before beginning his life time of work. Willie worked for the Charles City Motor Company as a detail man and worked his way up to mechanic. When the tornado caused that business to close, Willie started working as a mechanic at Hawkeye Ford and later Elthon Ford. Willie finished his working career with the City of Charles City Street Department before his retirement.

On March 3, 1962, Willie was united in marriage to Sharon Hector at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. The couple made their home in Charles City and were blessed with two children: Dean on July 3, 1966 and Dennie on Nov. 7, 1969. When Sharon retired in 1999, they decided to build a house on land they owned just north of De Soto, Wisconsin overlooking the Mississippi River. In 2002, they moved to Wisconsin and returned to Charles City on Feb. 5, 2020.

Willie was a member of The Moose Lodge, enjoyed bowling, camping, golfing, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed loving and teasing his two granddaughters. Willie was in awe to recently be told the news that he was going to be a great-grandfather to twins. He will be missed by all who loved him.

Living family members include his wife of almost 58 years, Sharon of Charles City; son, Dennie (Teresa) Van Hauen of Charles City; two granddaughters: Desirae Van Hauen (fiancé Dalton Reddel) of Riceville and Shantel Van Hauen of Charles City; sister, Janice (Bill) Tibbits of Taylor, Wisconsin; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Willie was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dean on Jan. 23, 1997; and two brothers: Bill and Bob Van Hauen.

Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home, (641) 228-2323, 1205 South Main Street, Charles City, Iowa 50616 is in charge of local arrangements. Online condolences may be left on the Tribute Wall for the family at www.hauserfh.com.
