Virgil James Schmitt, the son of Bernard and Lillian (Grimm) Schmitt, was born Aug. 11, 1949 in Charles City. He attended country school and helped on the family farm. Virgil also worked with other farmers in the area and helped dig graves at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Roseville.

Virgil loved farming and even until the very end would help feed the pigs with a cottage cheese container because he couldn’t lift anything heavier than that and wanted to be involved. He farmed with his dad and his brother, Albert, and after their father passed away Virgil continued farming with Albert. He was always ready to help others when they needed it and his family greatly appreciated this about him. Virgil was loved (spoiled actually) by many members of his family, and they will miss him greatly.

Virgil did love farming, but he also enjoyed watching his soap operas, He-Haw and country music (listening and watching videos). He always ate his meal before doing chores for the evening and no matter how big that meal was he always had his dessert…homemade rhubarb jam on bread.

Living family members include his brothers and sisters:  Linda Schmitt and Albert Schmitt both of Charles City, Judy (Dennis) Kapping of Nashua, Susan Schmitt, Diana (Garland) Thompson, Karen (Ed) Olsen, Francis (Betsy) Schmitt, Connie Schmitt, Nancy (Art) Lines, Thomas (Simone) Schmitt all of Charles City, Teresa (Richard) Drilling of New Hampton and Dale (Allison) Schmitt of Charles City; 15 nieces and nephews; 12 great-nieces and great-nephews; along with other family members and friends.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, David Kapping; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
