John H. Henry

John H. Henry, 82, of Nora Springs, formerly Charles City, passed away Monday, May 24, 2021 at the Nora Springs Care center in Nora Springs.

According to John’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be planned for a later this summer.

John Herbert Henry, the son of George and Mae (Rapp) Henry, was born April 5, 1939 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from Sibley Senior High School in 1957 and was united in marriage to Marcy Jurek on Aug. 27, 1960.

John was the Assistant Manager and Manager at JC Penney for 25 years working at stores located in West St. Paul, Oelwein, Mason City, Waukon and Charles City. He also spent 25 years as the manager of Yeg’s Sports in Charles City. John was a volunteer firefighter for 29 years in Waukon and Charles City, serving as the volunteer fire chief in Charles City for several years.

John enjoyed watching NFL games and was a lifelong Minnesota Vikings fan. He also watched NASCAR races, Iowa Hawkeye football, Judge Judy and Westerns. John liked feeding and watching the birds from his kitchen window and woodworking in his woodshop. He enjoyed spending quality time with his friends, especially camping.

John loved people. He was always first to volunteer to pitch in and help whenever needed. He had a great sense of humor and loved to good heartedly tease everyone. John was a self-taught carpenter and enjoyed time spent in his workshop, building and repairing anything he put his mind to.

John’s greatest source of pride and joy were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His favorite thing in the world was when all of the family was together. They all looked forward to his famous shish-ka-bobs, homemade bread and pea salad.

Living family members include his children: Deb (Galen) Roberts, Kim (Kent) Howe and Todd (Deb) Henry; grandchildren: Zach (Brenda) Roberts, Tyson (Christie) Roberts, Amanda (Greg) Guerin, Ali (Daniel) Wells, Nathan Howe, Brady Henry (Nicole Olson) and Gabby Henry; great-grandchildren: Tucker, Lanie, Micah and Hazel Roberts, Jackson, Emma and Ellie Guerin, Ayla Wells and Vila Henry.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Marcy Henry; parents, George and Mae Henry; and his father and mother-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
