CITY NOTES: 2017 Floyd County manufacturing wages top $100 million

In 2012 in this column we celebrated the fact that 2011 manufacturing wages in Floyd County eclipsed $50 million. This was a big milestone for us. Then, in 2013 we went over the $60 million mark.

2017 Floyd County manufacturing wages were $102,741,100. This is an increase of 16.4 percent over 2016.

Floyd County manufacturing wages by year:

• 2011 — $50,765,624.

• 2012 — $57,217,524.

• 2013 — $63,049,552.

• 2014 — $66,393,113.

• 2015 — $81,351,270.

• 2016 — $88,288,512.

• 2017 — $102,741,100.

We are blessed to have manufacturers successful at their businesses, paying good wages and benefits. We are worried about potential complications from trade wars, but otherwise our manufacturing sector is humming along.

In comparison, here are 2017 manufacturing wages from surrounding counties:

• Bremer — $86,195,330.

• Butler — $33,647,676.

• Chickasaw — $63,876,813.

• Howard — $50,192,431.

• Mitchell — $51,326,548.

It is important to note that all of these counties have smaller populations than Floyd excepting Bremer, which has about 50 percent more residents than Floyd County.

I am awaiting first quarter 2018 manufacturing data, whereupon we will see if this momentum carries over into 2018.
