City Notes: Summer recreational opportunities abound in Charles City

Steve Lindaman, Park & Rec Dept Director

Mother Nature has taken her time allowing spring to arrive, and I hope it is here to stay without any unwelcomed surprises.

The Park and Recreation Department has been preparing a number of opportunities for your participation, some of which I will highlight here.

The Lions Field Pool will be opening for the 29th season on Memorial Day, May 27. Due to school in session it will be closed May 28 through May 31 and reopen for the weekend, June 1 and 2, and then June 3-6 will be open after school from 4-7 p.m.

The pool will finally be open for the season beginning Friday, June 7. Hours of open swim are from 1 to 7 p.m. daily. Volunteer lifeguards will again provide their service to allow water walking from noon to 12:45 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the summer at no cost.

Red Cross swim lessons are scheduled for two sessions with the first one running June 12-28 and the second session July 8-24. For persons unable to make the morning sessions, there will also be one 6:30-7 p.m. class July 8-25, Mondays through Thursdays only.

Registration for lessons will soon be distributed at the schools and available at City Hall and the pool. Additional information may be obtained by contacting the pool when it opens for the season at 641-257-1188, or visit our Lions Field Pool Facebook page.

Calling all those looking for an adventure! If you are interested in learning whitewater kayaking, we have deal for you. All equipment needed for instructional use is available to use for FREE.

There are very experienced local kayakers willing to offer their skills and expertise to assist you in experiencing this exciting and adventurous sport. If interested, please contact me at 641-257-6312 and I will make arrangements with an instructor.

Additionally, please mark your calendars for the two summer competition events which will be held on June 22 for the Charles City Whitewater Challenge and June 29 for the Iowa Games competition.
In addition to being a great riverfront spectator event, volunteers are also appreciated.

For a second year at the Wildwood Golf Course, a junior golf clinic for youth ages 7-14 will be offered. Two sessions will be held, but to allow for maximum participation you can only sign up for one.

The first session will be in July and held in the mornings. Cost for the session is $30 and payable to the YMCA. Registration begins May 13 for both sessions. For additional information, please contact the YMCA at 641-228-2254 or Wildwood at 641-257-6322.

Due to increased interest in league play, we are starting a new Monday 2-person best shot league. It will be a handicapped play format based on average score as a team. The league is in process of being established with 16 teams already signed up.

Season will likely begin May and run through August. If interested, or if you have questions please contact Joel Bruner at 641-210-9108.

A Friday night couples outing is also being established. This will take place every Friday night opposite of Party in the Park nights, probably starting in June. It’s a very laid-back environment, where a modest entry fee qualities you for pin and flight prizes along with snacks prior to golfing.

Check out the Wildwood Municipal Golf Course face book page or call the clubhouse for additional information.

Please also be mindful of all the other facilities offered in the community like pickle ball, basketball, tennis, horseshoe courts, trail system, ballfields, dog park, picnic/playground areas, community gardens, and a substantial amount of open space for your own choice of leisure time activities.

In conclusion, I would like to thank the community for the many years of support to myself, to the entire Park and Recreation Board and to all departmental staff. Many departmental goals have been achieved with your input, guidance, and overall support.

I’m sure that whoever fills this position will greatly appreciate your continued support to expand and provide fantastic park and recreation facilities and programs!
