Letter to the Editor – Voters will decide on tax purpose statement

By Robin Macomber, President, Charles City Board of Education

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, Charles City Community School District residents will vote on a Revenue Purpose Statement. If approved, the statement would enable the district to continue to use funds from SAVE — Iowa’s one-cent sales tax for education — for various infrastructure and maintenance projects.

The reason for this vote stems from part of the state Legislature’s recent reauthorization of SAVE. School districts statewide must revise their existing Revenue Purpose Statements to continue investing sales tax dollars in projects to ensure they meet the wishes of their local communities.

Approving the Revenue Purpose Statement will not increase local property taxes, nor would it affect the state sales tax. It would simply clarify the purposes for which the Board of Education can invest penny sales tax dollars.

State law allows CCCSD to use these funds for various purposes, including information technology infrastructure, purchasing and improving grounds and furnishing and equipping district facilities.

The district could also remodel, reconstruct, repair, expand or improve school buildings, as well as implement energy conservation measures and provide funds for emergency repairs due to natural disasters.

The board is committed to providing community members with as much information as they need to make an informed vote Nov. 5.
