Letter to the Editor: Why is concern over health a ‘complaint’?

By Jen Hoeft, Charles City

This letter is in regards to your April 27th article titled “Despite complaints, Fisher holds firm on school districts mask mandate”

I found it interesting that my concern brought to the April 26th Charles City school board meeting was labeled as a complaint. The school is mandating my son to wear a mask for approximately nine hours a day and has yet to provide me with the long-term health effects he could face. My concern is considered a complaint.

The Floyd County Public Health, who recommends masks be worn at school, but not recommending it for the county public offices, is not able to provide me with the long-term health effects from mask use. Still, my concern is considered a complaint.

The district stated they are honoring the state and county boards of public health, which they have to live by. And instead of listening to concerns, it seems like they are recognizing the parents of their district as complainers. Why is my concern for my son’s health a complaint?

Parents, I encourage you to ask yourselves, if the school can make the health decisions for our kids, what’s next?
