WAVERLY — Let’s see.

There are rally monkeys … rally squirrels … rally geese … and let’s not forget no-hit eagles.

And just when the Charles City Comets needed it the most, out hops onto the artificial playing surface at Wartburg College’s Hertel Field a rally rabbit.

It took several minutes to track down the animal — or rather direct it to the nearest exit — before play of the second game of Wednesday’s Northeast Iowa Conference baseball doubleheader between Charles City and Waverly-Shell Rock could resume.

The comical delay involving yet another non-paying critter at a baseball game seemed like a good omen for the Comets, who were trailing 6-0 at the time. But the rabbit couldn’t produce — or reproduce— the luck Charles City needed.

Though the Comets did impose a bases-loaded threat in the sixth inning after the rabbit’s appearance, they couldn’t find enough holes … let alone rabbit holes … with their balls batted in play and only scored one run on way to losing the nightcap, 7-1.

But beforehand, the Comets managed to get a win over the Class 3A No. 10-ranked Go-Hawks on their home field.

In the first game, Charles City senior Theo Arndt pitched his best game of the season while scattering four hits and striking out five in the Comets 5-1 win.

Cole Reams and Jace Cajthami had two hits apiece for the Comets in the first game.

Though the doubleheader was played at Hertel Field, Charles City was the home team. The DH was originally to take place at Sportsmen’s Park but had to be relocated due to flooding caused by the recent storms.

For Arndt, who had two hits in the second game, Hertel Field will be his home field next spring as he will continue his baseball career at Wartburg College.

Battery mate Dylan Salinas will also play for the Knights next spring.

Salinas had doubles in both games of the doubleheader for the Comets, who are now 6-6 and 3-4 in the NEIC.

Kurby Vowels was the winning pitcher in the second game for W-SR after scattering seven hits in six innings.

Leadoff hitter Ryan Willis had two hits in both games for the Go-Hawks (15-4, 7-2).
