Undefeated Rockford to host No. 1 Don Bosco on Friday
Press Staff Report
ROCKFORD — Ever hear of the term “Teflon Don”?
Well, the Don Bosco, Gilbertsville football team could be aptly referred to as the “Teflon Dons”.
They sure seemed to be hard to get a grip on before reaching the end zone.
With an 84-6 win over Baxter last Friday, the Dons have now won 23 straight and seem well on their way to a third-straight 8-Man state championship.
This Friday, Don Bosco will travel to Rockford to take on the undefeated Warriors. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
If there ever was a quintessential case of “less is more”, it applies to the Rockford Warriors.
Having recently experienced the opposite from their upcoming opponents, Rockford had suffered a 23-game losing streak that spanned three seasons including the last two when the program played Class A 11-man football.
Now back in the 8-Man class, the Warriors are 2-0 with a pair of resounding victories over West Central (74-18) and Kee (70-14). Rockford even received a vote in the latest Associated Press Top 10 Iowa Prep Football Poll.
Currently, Rockford is leading the state including all the 11-man classes with a rushing average of just under 13 yards per carry.
Much of that can be attributed to Warrior senior quarterback Jacob Staudt, who has already accumulated 408 yards on just 22 carries (18.5 ypc). And nearly half of those carries have resulted in touchdowns as Staudt has rushed for 10 of them.
Senior running back Kaden Lyman has 262 yards and five TDs on just 20 carries; and senior linebacker Matt Muller leads Rockford’s defense with 21 tackles — 16 of them solo.
The No. 1-ranked Dons, who have outscored the opposition 134-12, are led by Thomas Even, who has 311 yards while averaging 18.3 ypc.
Dons quarterback Cael Frost has completed 7 of his 11 passes thrown this season with five of them resulting in touchdowns.
