Comets edge Waukon, 78-76, for 3rd straight win

Charles City senior Jack Molstead scored a team-high 24 points — including a 3-point, half-court shot at the buzzer to end the first quarter — while leading the Comets past hosting Waukon, 78-76, in Northeast Iowa Conference boys basketball action on Friday.
Comet sophomore JJ Ritter scored a career-high 19 points, and Tait Arndt (13 points) and Marcus Cranshaw (11 points) were also in double-figures for Charles City, which won its third straight dating back to last year before the holiday break while improving to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the NEIC.
The Comets survived a 40-point performance by Waukon senior Michael Sweeney, who made five 3-point shots and was 11 of 13 at the free-throw line.
The Indians fell to 2-6 and 0-4.
Charles City hosted the girls varsity game between the two schools that night, and lost to the Class 3A No. 8-ranked Indians, 61-22.
Comet freshman Rachel Chambers scored a career-high 8 points for Charles City, which fell to 0-9 and 0-5.
Waukon sophomore Annika Headington scored a game-high 13 points for the Indians (8-1, 5-1), who placed 12 players in the scoring column.
