WAUKON — While placing four players in the Top 15 all-conference listing, Charles City finished third at the Northeast Iowa Conference Boys Golf Meet, Monday at Waukon Golf and Country Club.

Senior Jackson Molstead and junior Tait Arndt both shot 18-hole scores of 82, good enough to be among a four-way tie for eighth.

For Molstead, who will be continuing his basketball career at Wartburg College, this was his last athletic event as a Comet. In addition to being a three-time basketball all-stater, Molstead also has the distinction of being a four-time all-conference golfer.

For Arndt, this was his first all-conference performance.

It was also the first for Comet junior Atticus Parrott and freshman Trevor White, who both shot 84 as part of a three-way tie for 13th.

Charles City senior Colton Slinger, who also went out for track this season and is a member of the Comets’ state-qualifying 4-by-400 and 4-by-800 relays, just missed earning his second-straight all-conference showing as his 85 placed him 16th.

“We going to lose some very good seniors,” Charles City head coach Dave Williams said of Molstead, Slinger and Carter Johanningmeier, who carded a 92 in his final prep golf meet, “but we’ve got four starters coming back when you include Tait (Arndt) and Skylar (Houdek), who split time at varsity.

“I know Trevor (White) is going to be playing a lot of golf during the summer. Hopefully, our other guys will, too.”

With a team score of 332, the Comets were edged by Decorah for second place by 1 stroke. We can in part blame Viking junior Jay Fjelstul for that as he shot a 2-under 70 for medalist honors.

Waverly-Shell Rock freshman Hogan Hansen was the runner-up medalist at 73. And though you generally need only a foursome for a team score, Hansen led a sextet of all-conference Go-Hawks including Bryson Hervol (80), Peyton Hallman (80), Pete McMillin (81), Dawson Bathke (83) and Derek Brandt (84).
With a team score of 314, W-SR won the NEIC title by a dominating 17 strokes.

After the final meet of the season for the Comets, Williams thanked the contributions of his departing four-year participating seniors, who also include Colton and Wolfgang Baldus.

“It was a pleasure as a coach to be on the golf course with these five gentlemen,” Williams said.
