Charles City’s Rachel Chambers was named to the All-Northeast Iowa Conference Volleyball first team. Chambers was the lone sophomore listed on the first team — all other first teamers were seniors.

Press Staff Report
For a team that was stopped one match short of the State Volleyball Championships, having only three players selected to the All-Northeast Iowa Conference Volleyball Teams initially comes across as a snub.

But the NEIC is as competitive as they come with a Class 4A state qualifier (Waverly-Shell Rock) and a 40-match-winner (New Hampton) in its midst.

That’s part of the crowd the Charles City Comets had to play with, let alone several state-ranked Class 5A teams in considerably stocked weekend tournaments.

Such a crucible didn’t yield a winning record (19-26), but it likely helped the Comets peak at the end of the season before losing to West Delaware in the Class 4A-Region 6 final earlier this week.

As for the three All-NEIC Comets, they included sophomore outside hitter Rachel Chambers (first team), junior middle blocker/hitter Danielle Stock (second team) and senior setter Jennifer Martin (honorable mention).

Chambers led the Comets in kills (237). She also had 145 digs, and was one of the team’s more aggressive servers with her sometimes unreturnable jump serve.

Stock, the team’s tallest player, led the Comets with 91 blocks and was second on the team in kills (165). She also slapped in a team-leading 47 aces.

Martin graduated from the program as one of the team’s Top 10 all-time assist leaders. She was second on the team to junior Sarah Mitchell with 348 assists. Martin also had 128 kills, 218 digs and 22 aces.

For all three Comets, it was the first time being honored as All-NEIC players.

No. 4-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock had three players named to the first team — Britney Young, Haley Eckerman and Jazlyn Westmoreland.

New Hampton also had three first teamers — Rachel Rinken, Ashlyn Tank and Kiersten Tenge.

Crestwood’s Sharon Goodman was the other first-teammer.
Young, Westmoreland, Rinken and Goodman were all first-team selections last season.

Other than Chambers, all other first-team selections were seniors.
