WATERLOO — The Charles City boys and girls bowling teams became the first Comet squads to earn victories during the winter sports season with road wins over Columbus Catholic, Tuesday at Cadillac Lanes.

Comet senior Cade Schmidt led all varsity rollers with a two-game series of 433 that included a 253 in his first game.

As a sophomore, Schmidt set a school record with a 526 series which still stands as the highest Comet boys series.

Sophomore Cael Bohlen, who led the Comets last year with an average just under 200, had a 398 series.

Seniors Kale Ross, Nathan Shultz and Noah Reams had respective two-game pinfalls of 404, 395 and 350 as Charles City compiled an individual round score of 1,980 before adding an 879 baker rotation round for a total score of 2,859 — 729 pins better than the Sailors.

Though the Comets won handily, their best performance wasn’t among the varsity ranks as Dillan Ross rolled a high game of 258 to go with a high series of 459.

The Comet girls were also 700-plus-pin winners.

Junior Sarah Mitchell led the way with a two-game series of 339, followed by freshman Imigin McHenry (336), junior Brianna Ross (331), senior Joslyn Cotton (328) and sophomore Sofia Nelson (308).

With individual and baker rotation totals, the Comet girls recorded a 2,513 pinfall.

The Comet boys and girls will be back in action when they host Denver, 4 p.m. Dec. 6 at Comet Bowl.
