OSAGE — During the traditional “Saturday Night Wrestling” dual-meet between Charles City and hosting Osage, there was a break in the action to allow those in attendance to make silent auction bids on items in the foyer as part of the “Coaches Against Cancer” event as well as to make concession-stand/restroom runs if needed.

Good thing they gave everyone that chance because you sure didn’t want to leave in the middle of Gage Kilby’s subsequent match.

Then again, even if you stayed seated and attentive to the action, you still might miss something significant due to blinking of the eyes.

The Charles City 113-pound freshman has shown a penchant for turning the fate of bouts on a dime — usually to his favor.

Against Green Devil Skyler Wright, Kilby was in trouble early and was fighting an already counted off 3-point near-fall. But in a flash of prone-position agility, Kilby flipped Wright over and got the slap at the 1:26 mark of the first period.

The stunning victory ignited the Comet bench and visitors’ section as well as putting one more nail in the coffin to seal Charles City’s eventual 42-25 victory.

For the Comets, it was the third dual-meet victory in as many nights. On Thursday, Charles City soundly defeated New Hampton/Turkey Valley 50-9 — the Chickasaws are two years removed from winning the Class 2A Dual Team State title which they followed with a runner-up showing in the Class 2A Traditional State meet; and then defeated an out-manned Waukon squad 72-9.

The win on the road against the Green Devils may have been the most impressive.

Osage has been ranked in the Top 10 among Class 2A teams this season according to various ranking sites. Charles City has also been ranked in the Top 10 at times during this season amid these site, but usually not as high as the Green Devils, who have gotten as high as No. 3 according to one source.

But the Comets — who had three first-period fall victories including a 33-second win from Jacob Vais over Garrett Tusler in the 106-pound bout; a 1:17 win from Alec Staudt over Ryan Adams at 138: and a 1:46 stoppage from Jack Sindlinger over Barrett Muller in the 195-pound bout — were sure the No. 1 team in Mitchell County on Saturday night.

Other victors for Charles City included Bronson Forsyth, who earned an 8-2 decision over Averee Abbee in their 132-pound bout; Roush Jaeger, who earned an 8-3 decision over Noah O’Malley in their 152-pound bout; Tino Tamayo, who earned a 5-1 decision over Keaton Muller in their 220-pound bout; and heavyweight Chase Crooks, who edged Conner Smith in a 1-0 decision.

One of the more anticipated matches of the evening was the 182-pounder between Charles City junior Caden Collins and Osage junior Colin Muller. Both are ranked wrestlers.

Muller suffered a foot injury during the match and was unable to continue, giving Collins and the Comets a 6-point victory.
