SAINT ANSGAR — A night after a return home from Decorah breached the wee-morning hours in the wake of dropping a doubleheader to the Vikings, the Charles City Comets had another long evening during Wednesday’s non-conference baseball loss to Saint Ansgar.

It was the fourth loss in a row for the Comets, who fell under .500 overall (7-8) for the first time this season. The DH loss to Decorah capped Charles City’s Northeast Iowa Conference record at 6-6.

Charles City has one more game on its shortened regular-season schedule — a non-conference home game against Vinton-Shellsburg on Monday.

The Comets will begin postseason play next Friday (July 17) in the semifinal round of the Class 3A District 6 bracket as they will travel to face the aforementioned Vikings.

The winner from that game will face the winner of the South Tama-at-Waverly-Shell Rock semifinal on July 20 at a site and time to be determined by way of eventual final matchup.

Against the Saints, the Comets got behind early and trailed 4-0 after two innings.

The Comets rallied for 2 runs in the fifth to cut the lead in half, but the Saints put up 3 more in the sixth on the way to winning 7-2.

Comet leadoff hitter Jeremiah Chapman had two hits and drove in a run. Tait Arndt, who started and took the loss, drove in Charles City’s other run.

John May had three hits including a 2-run double, and Braden Powers had a 2-run triple for the Saints.

Tuesday’s doubleheader against Decorah was figuratively as well as literally a “walk on the wild side” as Comet pitchers issued a total of 21 bases on balls during the two games which ended in finals of 10-5 and 12-2.

Chapman, Atticus Parrott and freshman Logan Carey, who was recently inserted into the starting lineup at third base, each had three hits for the Comets during the DH.
