CRESCO — Last year, the Charles City Comets volleyball team ventured into the postseason with a losing record.

The team then proceeded to “upset” several higher-seeded teams and was one match away from advancing to the State Volleyball Championships.

The reason for the losing record as well as for the deep postseason run may have been the tough tournament slate the Comets annually sign up for which pits them against state-ranked teams in succession during a single day.

This season has been much the same for Charles City. After starting the season 5-1, the Comets went on to play in high-caliber tournaments at Osage and Dike-New Hartford and got into a little funk as winning percentages go.

If this again proves to be the crucible needed, that remains to be seen. But it’s still nice to get back into the win column, which the Comets did with a straight set victory over hosting Crestwood on Tuesday.

Leading the Comets in the 25-19, 25-13, 25-23 victory was junior Kaylee Anderson (12 kills, 4 blocks), junior Ashlyn Hoeft (21 assists), senior Toni Maloy (14 digs) and senior Dani Stock (4 blocks).

The Comets (7-8) are due to be tested again when they travel to Cedar Falls on Saturday for yet another tournament featuring a bevy of state-ranked teams.

The tournament will take place in the WRC Building just north of the UNI-Dome starting at 9 a.m.
