CHARLES CITY — Charles City didn’t have the size and experience to challenge Waverly-Shell Rock point-blank at the net.

Instead, the Comets tried to “dig in” against the Class 4A No. 8-ranked Go-Hawks.

Though they were able to keep several rallies alive by hitting the floor at Comet Gym, the hosts were defeated in three sets (25-12, 25-16, 25-9).

Led by senior hitter Avery Beckett, who will play Division I volleyball for the University of South Dakota; and senior setter Sophie Sedgwick, Waverly-Shell Rock improved to 16-4 overall.

Charles City was led by freshman Mya Rimrod, who recorded team-highs in digs (12), kills (7) and service aces (2); senior Rachel Chambers (7 digs, 6 kills); junior Morgan Maloy (team-high 11 assist, 6 digs); junior Ava Ellis (8 digs, service ace); and freshman Anya Ruzicka (6 assists, 6 digs).

Next up for the Comets (7-8) is Saturday’s tournament hosted by Cedar Falls.
