Comet wrestlers go 1-1 at Humboldt triangular

Press Staff Report

HUMBOLDT — Charles City’s resident No. 5-ranked heavyweight Chase Crooks began the Comets’ season-opening meet competition much the same way he ended it, resulting in two bookend fall victories.

At Thursday’s triangular hosted by Humboldt, Crooks pinned his opponent to open the first dual against the hosting Lumberjacks before concluding the subsequent dual with Esterville with another fall victory.

The pin-win against Humboldt was one of few victories the Comets would post in the dual as the Lumberjacks dominated the lower and middle weight classes on way to a 57-15 victory.

But in the final bout of the meet against Esterville, Crooks’ second win of the night clinched a 42-37 victory for the Comets.

Charles City 170-pounder Trevor Peterson also went 2-0 during the triangular while edging both of his opponents with a pair of hard-fought 1-point decision wins.

Comet senior Tino Tamayo, ranked No. 2 among Class 2A 220-pounders, had a fall victory over the Lumberjacks in the only bout he wrestled on Thursday.

Charles City 145-pounder Talan Weber recorded a fall victory in the dual against Esterville, and Comet 132-pounder Nathan Lopez earned a 10-3 decision in the latter dual.

Charles City’s girls squad also saw some action with defending state champion and top-ranked 132-pounder Lilly Luft earning a fall victory, and 126-pounder Liz Oleson winning two matches — the Comet junior was on the mat in hopes to go 3-0 in a little more than a 30-minute span, but had her third bout nixed to expediate the varsity triangular.
