CHARLES CITY — There are 14 weight classes in high school wrestling.

The Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks have Top 10 wrestlers in 12 of them according to the latest Class 3A rankings posted by IAwrestle.

Four of those Go-Hawks are ranked No. 1 — junior Ryder Block (138), senior Aiden Riggins (152), junior McCrae Hagarty (195) and junior Jake Walker (HWT).

Riggins and Hagarty were individual champions respectively at 152 and 182 at last year’s State Wrestling Championships; Block and Walker were respective runners-up at 132 and 195.

All are returners from the Go-Hawks “double” state champion team that won the Class 3A Dual Tournament before compiling the most points in the subsequent Traditional Tournament.

Though trailing only Southeast Polk for the top spot among Class 3A teams in the IAwrestle rankings, the Go-Hawks’ 12 ranked wrestlers are the most in the state.

Several of those ranked wrestlers were in action during Thursday’s dual hosted by Charles City in the old high school gym.

The Go-Hawks went undefeated in the varsity bouts wrestled.

In the lone battle that featured two ranked wrestlers, Hagarty pinned Charles City senior Tino Tamayo in the first period of their 220-pound bout — Tamayo is ranked eighth among Class 2A 220-pounders.

Riggins was able to distance himself enough from Kayden Blunt to earn a 19-2 technical-fall in the third period of their 160-pound match.

Two varsity bouts did go the distance. In the final varsity match of the evening (145), Go-Hawk freshman Ethan Bibler earned a 6-3 decision over Comet sophomore Talan Weber. Earlier, WSR’s resident No. 8-ranked 170-pounder Sean Mwangi decisioned Trevor Peterson 7-2.

Go-Hawk Bas Diaz, No. 4 at 145, earned a fall victory over Colton Crooks in the varsity match-opening 152-pound bout; Tyler Gast pinned Blake Wilson at 195; No. 9-ranked Alex Hornyak had a fall victory over Carter Haberkorn at 106; Sam Hornyak stuck Dylan LaPolice in their 126-pound bout; No. 5-ranked Carter Fecht got the slap against Mason Nelson at 132; and Block earned a 18-2 technical fall against Charles City junior Nathan Lopez at 138.

Charles City did earn some wins in the girls dual with Lilly Luft (132), Elizabeth Oleson (132) Kylie Blunt (138), Kylie Vance (170) and Ava Thompson (HWT) all earning fall victories.
