Charles City girl, struck by vehicle on way to school, receives slight injuries

Press Staff Report

A Charles City girl received minor injuries and was able to continue to her classes after being struck by a car Tuesday morning on her way to school.

The Charles City Police Department said the girl, whose identity was not released, was on her way to Lincoln Elementary School Tuesday about 8 a.m. and was crossing the intersection at 4th Avenue and F Street when she was struck by a car.

Police said the driver claimed not to have seen the girl crossing the street because the sun caused a glare on the windshield. Police said the driver was ticketed for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

The Police Department reminded drivers and pedestrians to exercise extra care and vigilance now that school is open again for the year.

“Obviously with any school zone be very, very cautious,” said Police Captain Brandon Franke. “Go slow. Pay extra attention to your surroundings. We’re just all happy that she was not seriously hurt.”

AMR ambulance responded to the scene and EMS personnel checked the girl for injuries, determining that she had some scrapes and bruises and was OK to continue to school.
