Charles City School Board re-elects officers and adjusts committees

Charles City School Board re-elects officers and adjusts committeesBy Travis Fischer, tkfischer@charlescitypress.com

The Charles City School Board re-elected officers and shuffled committee assignments during its regular board meeting on Monday.

The board nominated and unanimously approved Pat Rottinghaus to continue serving as the board president, with Kathryn Fox also being unanimously re-elected to vice-president.

Updating the board’s committee assignments, board member David Schordt requested some changes to his assignments. To join the Facilities Committee, Schrodt traded places with Fox, who will take his spot on the Communications and Public Relations Committee. Schrodt also asked Josh Mack, who has long been on the County Conference Board, if he could have that position, to which Mack agreed, taking over Schrodt’s spot on the Negotiations & Compensation Committee.

The board also slightly tweaked the scheduled times and dates for their meetings for the upcoming year. Meetings will still be held twice a month on the second and fourth Mondays in most cases, but in December and July there will only be meetings on the second Monday. There will also be only one meeting in March, variable depending on where Spring Break falls.

In personnel matters, the board gave special recognition to several teachers and staff members for November’s outstanding performance nominations.

Rusty Rogotzke, Amy Krueger, Justin Jacobs, David Voves, Annick Beaver, Julie Molstead, Jeresa Jensen, and Jeff Holzer received certificates recognizing their efforts to go above and beyond. From preparing special activities to helping their co-workers to just maintaining sunny dispositions, the educators were thanked for doing their part in making the school better for both students and staff alike.

In the consent agenda, the board also approved several new appointments and accepted resignations from Special Education Teacher Timothy Young and Associate Director of Finance Roxanne Carey.

The board also approved a recommended increase in the price of general admission for athletic events, raising the ticket price one dollar for students and adults, bringing them to $4 and $6 respectively.

Also at the meeting, members of Project RISE where there to make a presentation to the board detailing who they are and what they do in the school and community.

Overseen by advisors Dan Caffrey and Karleen Sickman, the student led group, largely made up of at-risk high school students, works to mentor younger middle school students with similar difficulties, helping them with both studies and socialization. While starting as a mentoring program, the group has expanded beyond the classroom, raising funds and working with area organizations to provide food and clothes for students in households below the poverty line.

In other business, the board held a public hearing before approving the sale of a portion of school property to OmniTel Communications, which is purchasing an easement to facilitate its fiber expansion.

A public hearing date was also set for the next meeting to present the board with next year’s school calendar.

The 2023-24 calendar will be largely the same as this year’s with the exception of a change in the way teacher conferences are scheduled. Next year the school will be holding evening conferences on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the week, which will free up room to allow students and teachers to enjoy a three-day weekend.
