Kathy Crooks and Cherie Schafer were guest speakers at the Charles City Senior Center Monday, telling the history of the Salvation Army and also updating the group about the local Red Kettle campaign this year.

Bells were rung in four establishments – Ace Hardware, Fareway, Hy-Vee and Theisen’s – raising $11,000. They said a number of people mail their contributions in, also, so the total contributions collected this year was $21,800 in Charles City.

Crooks talked about the local Salvation Army board and the criteria used to decide how the money collected is used and to which groups it is given.

Schafer acknowledged Marilee Monroe, who Schafer said has worked tirelessly with the local Salvation Army for more than 40 years.
