Jeffrey Powell of Charles City was presented the Eagle Scout rank on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, in a ceremony and reception held at the Charles City Elks Lodge. Powell is a member of Boy Scout Troop 1078. His Eagle service project was the construction of a pet isolation and supply storage building for the local humane society, Pets Are Worth Saving (PAWS). Powell presents PAWS representative Julie Taylor with a donation check of just over $400 for PAWS, which was leftover from the project fundraising.
Over his Scouting career, Powell was a Patrol Leader and an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. He also went to Philmont Scout Ranch for a 10-day, 93-mile backpacking trek. In addition, Powell also winter camped at the Winnebago Scout Ranch near Marble Rock and attended the North Wind winter camping program at Camp Stearns in Minnesota three times.
Special speakers at the Eagle ceremony were Troop 1078 Committee Chair Murray Harris, Father Carl Ries, Taylor, Doug Kamm on behalf of Elks Lodge 418 and Msgr. Stanley Hayek. The Eagle oath and challenge was administered by Eagle Scout Lon Schlader.
A freshman at Creighton University, where he is majoring in pre-pharmacy studies, Jeff is the son of Alan and Linda Powell, who are pictured at left with Jeff and their other son Kevin, who is also a member of Troop 1078.
