Steven LeRoy Shankland was born Jan. 21, 1946, in Osage, Iowa, to Burrell and Eunice (Quinby) Shankland. He grew up in Floyd, Iowa, and attended elementary school there. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1964. He attended Mason City Junior College and college in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He lived in Florida and worked construction before returning to the Midwest and graduating from the University of Mankato in 1972.

Steve and Susan (Wolle) Shankland were united in marriage on Jan. 20, 1973. After marriage they moved to Kansas and Nebraska. They made Charles City their home in 1979. Steve took over his father’s insurance business and owned Shankland Insurance until 2012. He and Susan had three children: Amy, Allison, and Robson.

Steve’s passion was flying. He flew for a variety of people and agencies, including the Charles City Airport and Aerial Services, Inc. Steve and his son spent many hours working and hunting on the family land, referred to as “The 80”. He enjoyed traveling, and returned annually for many years to Vietnam. He especially enjoyed spending time in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, and at the family cabin in Nisswa, Minnesota, earning the title “Captain of the Pontoon”. Steve was a social guy and met people everywhere he went. He always had a story to tell and a smile to share. People who knew him well got to experience his contagious laugh and know that he often spoke in “Curse”ive. If you spent time with him, you probably saw him on his phone. His children were his pride and joy and he would never miss a chance to answer their calls. Steve was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Floyd Lions and the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; children: Amy (Dale) Hurrle, Allison (Sam) Stoppelman, and Robson (Sujeong) Shankland; grandchildren: Sophia Hurrle, Ethan and Jaxon Stoppelman, and Olivia Shankland; as well as his nephew, Scott (Chris Wright) Shankland (Keagan, Aydan, Leela) who he considered part of his immediate family. He is also survived by his niece, Deb (Shankland) Montagne; several siblings-in-law and other nieces and nephews all of whom he dearly cherished.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Burrell and Eunice Shankland; his brother, James; his mother and father-in-law, Harold and Marian Wolle; his sister-in-law, Barbra Wolle Lorenzsonn; and his brother-in-law, Dave Rasmussen.
