Charles E. ‘Gene’ Henely

Charles E. “Gene” Henely passed away on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2023 at the Floyd County Medical Center.

Gene was born on May 11, 1929 in Clarion, Iowa to Charles E. and Angie Louise (McCoy) Henely. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1947 and married Anna Marie Rassmusen in 1949. They moved to Charles City and began their life together. In the next few years, sons Kenneth and Fredrick(deceased) were born into the family.

When first arriving in Charles City, Gene worked for what is now the Natural Resource Conservation Service. In 1953 he and Anna Marie began a lifelong journey farming.

In retirement, Gene and Anna Marie enjoyed family, friends, fishing and traveling. They visited every state except Delaware. The highlight of their travels was going to Australia and New Zealand.

Gene served on many boards of directors and committees in industry, government, and church.

In late 1997 Fred died unexpectedly, creating a great empty place in the family.

Gene was preceded in death by Anna Marie, Fred, his parents, 2 sisters, and a brother.

He is survived by special friend Eleanor Waid; son, Ken (Darla) Henely; Grandson Joe, son of Fred and the late Gail Henely Fiedler; Grandsons, Eric (Christine) and Martin, sons of Fred and Jolene Henely Longmore; Grandsons, Tom and Phil, sons of Ken and Darla; great-grandson Jonathan, son of Joe; great-grandson Peter and great-granddaughter Ruth, children of Eric and Christine; and great-great-grandsons, Xander and Zayden sons of Jonathan. Along with many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Gene will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at the First Baptist Church, 105 Chapel Lane, Charles City with Pastors Matt Howlett and Jack Wolgamuth officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. before the service. Inurnment will take place at Howardville Cemetery, rural Floyd at 2 p.m. that afternoon.

Cremation services were provided by Hauser Weisharr Funeral Home.
