Marian Flowers was born Feb. 4, 1927, near New Haven, Iowa the fourth of eight children born to Abner and Rosetta Flowers. She grew up in Osage, Iowa and graduated from high school there in 1944. During high school, she worked cleaning turkeys and candling eggs for the war effort. After high school, she worked at the Oliver Tractor Company where one night after work she met Arnold Johnson. They were married April 25, 1946, and had five daughters: Cathy, Carol, Connie, Debra, and Kimberly.

In the fall of 1967 she began the job of her dreams as a library aide at Washington Elementary School where she continued working for 42 years. She loved books, reading, and encouraging children as they developed their own love of reading, so this was a perfect place for her. She passed that love of reading on to all her daughters and believed “Reading is the secret to everything.”

She was an accomplished poet often being asked to write a special verse for someone at Washington Elementary or for one of her grandchildren. She wrote her last poem this past January as part of the DAR American Heritage Contest.

Marian also enjoyed sewing, embroidery work, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. Trips to Branson with her sister and brother-in-law were very special as were trips with her daughters and their families. She always made time for a visit and a cup of coffee. If you were someone in need, she was ready and willing to help.

Last fall, Marian joined the Dr. Elisha Dick Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution when her lineage was proven to Amariah Harris, her fourth great-grandfather, who fought in the Revolutionary War in Massachusetts.

Marian was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, confidant, and friend. She made holidays and nights “staying over at Grandma’s” truly special. She was a woman of strong faith and a tender heart.

She is survived by three daughters: Carol (Paul) Sensor of Hampton, Deb Tudor of Thornton, Kim (Tory) Menken of Charles City; nine grandchildren: Kellen (Darla) Sensor, Ingrid Sensor, Angela Tudor, Fletcher (Miaka) Tudor, Chelsea (Jared) Price, Zac Schilling, Kyle (Megan) Schilling, Hunter Menken, and Hannah Menken; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Marilynn Reis of Osage and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, two daughters, Cathy and Connie, son-in-law, Jeff Tudor, her parents, and six brothers and sisters.

May her memory be a blessing.
