Carol ‘Jean’ Duffield

Carol “Jean” Duffield, 87, of Charles City, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2023, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City.

Carol Jean (Freiberg) Duffield, the daughter of Carl and Josephine (Ryan) Freiberg, was born on March 6, 1936, in Charles City. She attended Immaculate Conception School in Charles City and graduated in 1954. Jean worked with the Des Moines Register Newspaper for 13 years.

Living family members include her children: Timothy (Kim) Kernes, Laurie Pederson (fiancé Tim Betts), and Kathleen (Douglas Propst) Wray; grandchildren: Matthew Moorehead, Ashley Parker, Michael Jurgensen, Paul Jurgensen, Chad Jurgensen, and Erica Kernes; many great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Freiberg; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Robert W. Kernes, Roger Ferch, and James A. Duffield; two sons: Robert A. Kernes and Patrick Kernes; grandson, Scott Kernes; and siblings: Joan Schneider, Patricia Bunston, Mavis Kilby, and Maxine Pattschull.
