Letter to the Editor: Former Floyd County assessor thanks the community

By Gary L. VanderWerf, Charles City

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Floyd County for allowing me to serve all of you and to thank Bruce Hovden for hiring me.  It has gotten to the point where it’s time for me to say goodbye and move on from the position of your Floyd County assessor.

I have given nineteen years of service to Floyd County and I am taking with me a wealth of knowledge and experience.  The decision to leave is simple. The ability to walk out comes at a great time for me to leave the stresses and to also have someone else take over the position.

For almost two decades, playing the part of appraiser, deputy assessor, and assessor, came with a lot of education, dedication and commitment to learn about our jobs and our roles. I have always prided myself as a professional that wants to do my best for the betterment of our Floyd County residents and business owners.

When I would walk into the office it was best to expect the unexpected. It is an office that comes with much responsibility because of the nature of our job.

Our office is an integral part of our tax system, so to be fair and equitable means we would listen to our taxpayers and make sound decisions regarding valuations while educating those that do not understand the processes.

It is a great job to be involved with what is happening in our county.  It turned out to be a win-win for everyone involved and I was very happy to be part of it and will miss it very much.
