CHARLES CITY — If Carter Proffitt were a basketball player, he’d might score 20 points a game.

As a freshman 126-pounder for the Charles City Comets wrestling team, Proffitt can light up the scoreboard with a rapid series of one-legged and two-legged takedowns — sometimes amping up the total by repeatedly letting his opponent escape his grasp.

Against Waukon’s Chance Cota during the Comets’ Northeast Iowa Conference home double dual also featuring Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday, Proffitt had a 10-2 lead before getting the fall 3:27 into the match.

During the Comets’ subsequent dual against the Go-Hawks, Proffitt proved he could win close matches, too, when he edged Andrew Schwab in a 5-4 decision for his second win of the day.

Comet senior AJ Maloy only had one non-forfeit victory during the double dual when he pinned Waukon’s Alex Brink 3:04 into their 220-pound bout to start the varsity meet. For Maloy, it was the 100th win of his prep wrestling career.

Last week, Maloy picked up his 50th career pin.

Comet 132-pound senior Nate Lasher — who picked up his 100th win last week — also only got to wrestle once and made the most of it by earning a 8-3 decision over Go-Hawk Ian Heise.

Alex Koehler had two win for the Comets in the 182-pound class. His pin of Waukon’s Kyle Gordon 3:42 into their bout clinched the dual for the Comets as they took a 42-34 lead over the Indians with just one match remaining.

Sam Niichel went on to seal the Comet 46-34 victory with a 12-1 major decision over Indian Landon Berns in their 195-pound bout.

Koehler and Niichel later picked up their second wins of the evening during the W-SR dual.

Koehler defeated Go-Hawk Brayden Wolf 6-3 a match ahead of Niichel earning a hard-fought 5-2 decision over Dylan Eggleston.

The Comets lost their dual with the Go-Hawks (43-18) as the meet ended with a heavyweight rematch between Charles City’s Luke Hillegas and Waverly-Shell Rock’s Andrew Snyder.

In their previous meeting in Waverly, Hillegas managed to preserve a 1-0 lead and win when he rode Snyder out the entire third period.

The rematch looked as if it was going to end the same way before Snyder recorded an escape in the final second of regulation.

Snyder eventually was awarded the sudden-victory when he was credited with a takedown at the edge of the circle.

Waverly-Shell Rock defeated Waukon, 78-5, in their dual.
