A light rain didn’t deter hundreds of people from turning out for an open house Friday evening for the new Floyd County Youth Enrichment Center at the county fairgrounds.

The rain did help point out one of the reasons for the combined open house and fundraiser, however.

“This is all paid for,” said Jim Lundberg, the Charles City FFA adviser and ag education instructor, as he swung his arms to point to the four corners of the large building.

What isn’t paid for, he said, are the parking, sidewalks and landscaping. The rain contributed to puddles and muddy conditions surrounding the new building, and fundraising Friday night would go toward completing grounds work.

Fundraising efforts included raffles, live and silent auctions, food sales and hundreds of items of donated food, crafts and merchandize for sale. Floyd County Cattlemen grilled meat to go along with the meals available for purchase, as the kitchen is not yet completely installed.

FFA students and Fair Board members were on hand to answer questions or offer directions.

The parking and landscaping are expected to be completed in time for this summer’s Floyd County Fair. The facility is also available for rent for conferences and other large-group gatherings.
